‘The Darkest Minds’ in a big screen adaptation

Ruby Daly is one of the few lucky ones who have survived the outbreak of mysterious disease that had decimated most of America’s children a few years ago, but as she wakes up in the morning of her tenth birthday, she realises that her miraculous immunity didn't come without a high price to pay. Something about her had fundamentally changed – somehow, inexplicably, she has acquired powerful supernatural abilities which are however completely beyond her control. Abilities so frightening that her own parents lock her up in the garage and call for the police.

British actress Gwendoline Christie appears in the film adaptation of ‘The Darkest Minds’as a bounty hunter.

Now sixteen years old, Ruby lives in Thurmond, a brutal government ‘rehabilitation camp’, where she is kept interned with other kids like her. While the abilities of all youngsters are considerable, it is Ruby whose paranormal skills are most powerful, making her stand out from the other detainees of the facility. Desperate to find the rumoured safe haven for special youth like her – ‘East River’, Ruby escapes Thurmond and joins a group of children who have run away from another, similar camp. But when they finally arrive at East River, nothing is as it seems, least of all the refuge’s mysterious leader. Moreover, there are other forces at work – people who will stop at nothing to use Ruby in their fight against the corrupt government. Ruby finds herself facing a terrible choice – one that may mean giving up her only chance of having a normal life worth living…

This is the premise of the upcoming science fiction thriller directed by Jennifer Yuh Nelson from the screenplay written by Chad Hodge. Neither the director nor the screenwriter are new to the genre, as they in the past worked on the cult neo-noir science fiction film Dark City, and the intriguing and original sci-fi television series Wayward Pines, respectively. The film, which is an adaptation of the young-adult novel of same name by New York Times bestselling American author Alexandra Bracken, stars Amandla Stenberg in the main role of Ruby Daly, Golden Brooks as Molly Daly, Ruby’s mum, Mandy Moore as Cate, Patrick Gibson as Clancy Gray and Skylan Brooks as Chubs. English actress Gwendoline Christie, best known as Brienne of Tarth from the ‘Game of Thrones’ fantasy television series, also makes an appearance as a bounty hunter of the escapees from the camp.

Principal photography on the film began in April 2017 in Atlanta, Georgia, with the release expected sometime during 2018-2019, but, as it comes in the wake of a slew of other young-adult novel adaptations (Hunger Games, The Giver, Divergent, The Maze Runner, The 5th Wave) it remains to be seen if the movie can bring anything new or original.
