Star Wars Anthology: Han Solo Origins film announced

The next adventure in the Anthology series of standalone Star Wars films will tell the back story of space smuggler Han Solo, Lucasfilm and Disney have announced. Han Solo was first time portrayed by, then 35-years-old, Harrison Ford in 1977’s Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope (originally titled simply ‘Star Wars’) and last time (so far) played by the same actor in 1983’s Return of the Jedi.

The second Star Wars spin-off film will be directed by Christopher Miller and Phil Lord, whose credits include the critically acclaimed The Lego Movie and Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, as well as 21 Jump Street and its sequel 22 Jump Street. The duo are quoted as looking forward to applying their unique creative chemistry to the Star Wars universe.

Harrison Ford was 35 years old when he portrayed Han Solo for the first time in 1977’s Star Wars.

“This is the first film we’ve worked on that seems like a good idea to begin with. We promise to take risks, to give the audience a fresh experience, and we pledge ourselves to be faithful stewards of these characters who mean so much to us. This is a dream come true for us. And not the kind of dream where you’re late for work and all your clothes are made of pudding, but the kind of dream where you get to make a film with some of the greatest characters ever, in a film franchise you’ve loved since before you can remember having dreams at all.” says the double-act of American filmmakers.

The screenplay for the feature film will be written by yet another pair of filmmakers, father-son tandem Lawrence & Jon Kasdan. Lawrence Kasdan is best known as the co-writer of two films from the original Star Wars trilogy – The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi, as well as action-adventure film Raiders of the Lost Ark, another cult movie starring Harrison Ford. He is also co-writer of the upcoming Star Wars: The Force Awakens and the remaining two, as yet unnamed, films of the third Star Wars trilogy.

The story of the standalone film will focus on how young Han Solo became the scoundrel, smuggler and thief whom Luke Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi first encountered in the Chalmun’s Cantina in the ‘pirate city’ of Mos Eisley on the planet Tatooine.

It is not yet known who will portray young Han Solo.

Kathleen Kennedy, president of Lucasfilm and the brand manager of the Star Wars franchise, who will produce the film, said: “It’s not just any filmmaker who can tell the story of such a beloved icon like Han Solo, and I’m excited to say we’ve found the perfect team to handle the task. Larry and Jon know all there is to know about the character, and Chris and Phil will bring their wit, style, energy and heart to tell Han’s story.”.

The yet untitled Han Solo Origins Star Wars spin-off film is scheduled for a release on 25 May 2018.
